Montessori Progress Grid

Record every child's stage on every lesson from one grid, tick milestones with a date and a note, and plan or move a whole room in one action.

Where to find it: Learning & Progress → Progress Grid

Reading the grid

Lessons run down the left, children run across the top, and each cell is one child's stage on one lesson. Lessons are grouped by sub-area under the area you have chosen; Expand all and Collapse all open or close every group.

Practical Life for Demo Room: one column per child, one row per lesson, a legend above the grid.

Cell

Means

Dotted +

Not started. A blue dotted + marks the next lesson in sequence for that child.

P

Planned. Hover to see the day it is planned for, or "no day picked yet".

I, Pr, M

Introduced, Practiced, Mastered.

Green tick in the corner

The child has ticked milestones on this lesson. Hover the cell for the count.

∞ next to a lesson

Ongoing, practice-only lesson. It never reaches Mastered.

Filters. Classroom, Groups, Students and Area sit on the bar; Filters opens the rest (labels, age band, status). The pin keeps a filter on the bar. Clear all resets them. A room must be mapped to a lesson set for its lessons to appear; if it is not, the page shows a Map your classrooms to lesson sets banner.

Set a child's stage

  1. Click the cell. A small menu opens.

  2. Under Set stage choose Planned, Introduced, Practiced or Mastered. The cell updates at once.

The cell menu: stages, the lesson's milestones for this child, Reset Record, Edit Details, Add record and the history.

The rest of the menu:

  • Milestones n/m opens the milestone panel for this child and lesson (next section). It only appears on lessons that have milestones.

  • Reset Record clears the recorded status for this child on this lesson. It cannot be undone.

  • Edit Details changes the assigned teacher and notes on the record.

  • Add record opens the observation form with this child and lesson already tagged.

  • View history lists every stage change with its date and the teacher who made it, and links to the observation that recorded it.

Choosing Planned asks for a day: pick a date, or I don't know yet to leave it unscheduled. Planned lessons appear on the Lesson Plan page.

Planning a whole row by dragging. Drag from a planned cell across the other children's cells to plan the same lesson for all of them in one go.

Tick milestones for a child

Each library lesson carries one or more milestones. Ticking one records that the child showed that behaviour, with a date and, if you like, a note.

  1. Click the cell and press Milestones in the menu.

  2. In the panel, tick the milestone. The date defaults to today; change it if you saw it earlier.

  3. Press + Add a note to write what you observed and press Enter to save.

The milestone panel for one child and one lesson, with the date and a note under the ticked milestone.

Use the search box at the top of the panel when a lesson has a long list. Ticking a milestone does not change the stage; set the stage yourself when the child is ready.

Milestones and observations. A tick is also written to the child's observations: if there is already an observation for the same day linked to this lesson, the milestone is added to it; otherwise a short staff-only observation is created so the tick shows on the child's timeline. Administrators can turn this off with Don't create an observation when a lesson plan status changes in Lesson Settings. Milestones ticked inside an observation show up here too, so the two always agree.

Bulk actions

Tick the checkbox next to one or more lessons. A bar appears at the bottom with the number of lessons selected and the children on screen.

Two lessons selected: the bulk bar offers Plan for…, Set stage, Milestones and Clear.

Action

What it does

Plan for…

Plans the selected lessons for every child on screen on a day you pick. Children who already have the lesson keep their stage.

Set stage

Sets Introduced, Practiced or Mastered for every child on screen. Children already further along are left as they are.

Milestones

Opens a panel listing each selected lesson's milestones with one checkbox per milestone: full when every child on screen has it, half when only some do. Tick to apply to everyone. A shared date and note at the top apply to each tick you make; Apply to already ticked pushes them onto existing ticks too. Shown only when a selected lesson has milestones.

Clear

Takes the selected lessons off this week's plan for the children on screen. A child who was only Planned goes back to Not started; a child who has already had the lesson keeps that stage.

Use the Students filter first when the action should only reach some children: the bulk bar always acts on the children currently on screen.

Add observation and Actions

  • Add observation (top right) opens the observation form. Tag children and lessons with @ and #, pick the stage and tick milestones; the grid updates when you save.

  • Actions holds the page-level options such as the links to lesson set mapping and milestone setup.

Common mistakes

What people do

What happens

Do this instead

Run Set stage with every child on screen

Every child on screen gets the stage, including the ones who were absent

Filter Students to the group you presented to first

Tick a milestone and expect the cell to turn green

The cell gets a small tick badge; the stage stays what it was

Set the stage separately when the child is ready

Reset a record to "undo" a wrong stage

The whole history for that child and lesson is cleared

Set the correct stage instead; the history keeps both entries

Cannot find a lesson that is in the library

The area filter is on another area, or the group is collapsed

Search the lesson by name; the grid jumps to it
